Music Without Cable Clutter? – Pros And Cons Of Wireless Audio Transmitter Devices
Over the years a whole array of wireless audio transmitters have emerged which are supposed to eliminate the cords at home when connecting audio equipment. We will take a look at latest products to find out whether they can deliver on their claim to cut the cable mess and we’ll examine how changing technology has influenced performance of these products.
Wireless transmission of music has started with the launch of commercial radio broadcasts several decades ago. While still being popular now, FM radio is now being substituted by modern technologies including HD radio, satellite radio and DAB broadcasts. Today’s wireless consumer products such as wireless speaker kits, baby monitors, Bluetooth audio transmitters and wireless microphones cut the cord.
Many houses which are not wired for audio are ideal for using wireless audio to distribute music all through the home. The technologies used these days all have pros and cons as we will examine.
FM transmitters are using the most traditional technology in which audio is sent by changing the frequency of a radio-frequency carrier. This technology is called frequency modulation or FM. It is fairly simple to implement. Thus FM transmitters are extremely cost-effective. In addition, FM transmission offers high range. While most of today’s 900 MHz products utilize FM transmission, FM has some major problems.
The FM signal will pick up hiss. Therefore there will be noticeable background noise. The amount of static will depend on the location of the transmitter and radio. This is due to the fact that the radio signal is bouncing off walls and will cancel itself out at different locations. This phenomenon is known as multi-path fading. One method to deal with this problem is employing two antennae instead of one. Products utilizing this technique are called diversity receivers. In addition, FM transmissions will easily pick up interference from other wireless devices.
Another technology which has gained popularity recently is called Bluetooth. Bluetooth was originally designed to connect computer peripheral devices wirelessly. Before the signal is sent, Bluetooth transmitters will convert the audio into a digital format. While offering high robustness against wireless interference, Bluetooth has several problems in regard to audio transmission since it was never designed with the purpose of transmitting audio. Bluetooth merely offers a range of 30 ft or less and will compress the audio because it does not offer enough space to broadcast an uncompressed CD-quality signal. As a result of the audio compression, the audio quality will decrease. The last setback is the fact that Bluetooth will cause a delay in the signal (also known as latency) which is a problem when used together with video since the audio will be out of sync or if used in a surround sound setup where some of the loudspeakers would be out of sync with the hard-wired speakers.
Satellite radio and digital terrestrial radio technologies offer high range but use extensive audio compression leading to degradation of the audio signal and have an audio delay of more than a few seconds.
The technology used in Amphony’s wireless audio transmitters sends audio in a digital format without audio compression. The signal will retain the original quality by avoiding audio compression. This technology offers an audio latency of less than 1 ms. Consequently these transmitters can be used for wireless speaker kits in a home theater system and other real-time applications.
By using error correction, this technology can deal with interference from competing wireless products which is essential in today’s noisy environment. Rather than utilizing the crowded 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands, Amphony products operate at 5.8 GHz and thus offer high reliability. Other than Bluetooth, this technology can operate any number of receivers per transmitter which is essential for sending audio to several locations throughout the home.
