Don’t Expect To Succeed In The IM Roost If You Aren’t Good At Communicating
When you initially start to get into IM and test the waters a bit, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. As you sort through information in articles and online forums, you’ll discover all types of lists featuring "how you too can be the next big thing!"
The items on these lists likely all appear conflicting. One list will claim "patience" is the ingredient to becoming the next "it person". Business savvy is one more claim often made by these lists. Still, another will tell you that creativity is what will make you a success. And don’t forget about all of the pages telling you that the software they offer is what will help you become successful in IM.
Here’s the facts: All of these things are important (okay, perhaps not the software, but the other things). You have to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you wish to be successful. But none of those things are going to matter if you are unable to intelligibly communicate all of them to the people you want to buy from you.
There is more to good communication than publishing an amazing sales page. You can hire a highly competent copywriter to take care of that for you. A beautiful web site and lengthy FAQ are not what you need for good communication. A good designer and writer can give you those. Effective communication calls for being good with interpersonal communication and in direct copy too. How do you get that?
1. Respond to each email you get within 24 hours of it arriving in your inbox. This is no joke. The email doesn’t need to be lengthy. All you need to do is pen a short note that says something like "I got your e-mail and will be sending you a detailed response soon." Try to include a portion of the email that references something the sender has written. This is what will tell the person that you genuinely go through every email you got and are not an autoresponder.
2. Try not to let the phone ring and ring. Avoid screening your calls. Try to answer the phone by the third ring. Do this even if you seriously have no wish to talk to the person calling you. There’s one good news about this rule. Don’t worry about being near your phone around the clock. Instead, just schedule clear "business" hours during which you can answer phone calls. These business hours should be displayed prominently on your site and stated in your voice mail message as well. And, naturally, every caller who leaves a message deserves a return call.
3. Ensure that the people you send messages and emails to really get them. This will tell the person that you really care about keeping in contact with them. You’ll endear yourself even more with the people you work with and who buy your products if you ask them if they have any questions and double check to make sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
