A Look at the Garmin GPS Systems
This post is likely to give you an introduction to Garmin’s main automotive GPS products, what their features are and exactly how much they will cost you. Garmin stands out as the industry leader in GPS systems, and I am also intending to compare these for their main competitors, Magellan and Tom Tom. This is going to supply you with the important information to select the perfect Garmin GPS suitable for you and your budget.
Before we start, Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan aren’t the only three GPS manufacturers available. There are various others. These three, however, have become the big three, representing probably 90% in the GPS sales. Garmin itself sells about 70% among the GPS systems sold.
Must you just consider these three manufacturers when buying a GPS system? Definitely not! Explore any alternative companies. The majority of them offer good products with competitive prices. Just as a personal note, I just tend to keep to the major manufacturers whenever I purchase something. In that way I understand my purchase will be supported the coming year or the next.

Before I mention Garmin products in particular, let’s talk just a bit about GPS receivers in general–especially what their main features are.
The basic top features of any GPS after-market automotive system are the following:
* Touchscreen display interface with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional views
* Automatic calculation with the fastest route and the shortest route to your destination
* Database of plenty of pre-programmed destinations, or Points of Interest (POI’s)
* Pre-loaded with maps with the lower 48 United States
If this describes all you need, then you could have this from Garmin for right around $150! The Garmin nuvi 200 is a perfect unit just for you. It is able to do all of the above and even more.
Tom Tom and Magellan also provide competitive products with this price structure. The Tom Tom One and the Magellan Maestro 3100 are good introductory GPS receivers. They should do the suggestions above and more, and both cost around $150.
However, if you need more, it isn’t really that expensive to have it!
For an additional $100 to $200, you may get a GPS receiver, which does all this:
* Wider 4.3-inch screen
* Saying street names with the spoken directions
* More Maps–Canada, Mexico, Europe
* More POI’s (what about 6 million?)
* Bluetooth, for hands-free calling
* Real-time traffic and weather (with subscriptions)
The Garmin nuvi 350 can perform much of this, though it only has the 3.5-inch screen. At this time the nuvi 350 runs about $200. Magellan’s 3250 is their direct competitor with the nuvi 350.
