It is not that many years back that we would pick up the telephone, ring our buddy, family member or loved one on the other part of the world, nattered for what appeared like hours and hours, and when we ended the phone call we were cheery.
A number of weeks soon after the telephone charge would turn up, you would open the bill, see the international phone call charges, and just about manage to slither to the telephone to ring the emergency services before you passed out!!
Then our community store would begin stocking phone cards. We would purchase them having no thought of all the costs involved, but we did not bother, they were a lot cheaper than phoning directly, although they never appeared to survive as long as what was advertised.
Now these days we have the web with uninhibited calls from Pc to Pc with the likes of Yahoo messenger, MSN, Skype, and a lot of others. This saves us a lot of money compared with the old days. And if the person on the other end did not have a computer, no problem we could still utilize VOIP (Voice Over IP) to make contact with landlines and mobile phones using Skype, and other services. They charged for this, but it was still economical, extremely inexpensive.
Now we do not even require a computer for VOIP, some mobile phone services now have Skype as part of the service so we now have mobile phone to mobile phone anywhere in the world, with on the whole country to country costs being extremely small.
However specific countries are still quite costly, take the UK-Philippines, using a BT landline would cost you about $0.60/min, using Skype it still costs $0.24/min (it used to be $0.16/min but Skype put the prices up). The motive for these high charges is not Skypes fault; the countries in question charge a lot for providing the services. Whereas UK-USA is simply $0.02/min.
All is not gone those for folk involved with high rates even on VOIP, we now have access to sites that market a lot of phone cards, and I have come across prices as small as $0.07c/min for UK-Philippines. Amazing!
