Bearings Make Turning, Rotating and Rolling Pieces Possible
Once the wheel was discovered and our civilization understood that it is far more convenient to move things that roll as opposed to sliding them, the need for bearings came about. Anything that rolls or revolves calls for a bearing. This little tool is utilized to lessen friction of the rotating components and also to help carry the load.
There are various sorts of bearings for different things that bear radial load, thrust load or a combo of the two. Radial load describes forces applied perpendicular to the axis of the bearing’s shaft. On the other hand, thrust load describes forces applied parallel to the bearing’s axis. Some other lingo for the two variations of forces are rotary loads, as a synonym of radial and linear loads, which is a synonym for thrust.
The most popular and traditionally used style of bearing is the ball bearing. These can easily be found in personal computers, inline skates or even a washer. This variety of bearing can take both radial and thrust loads and are utilized in conditions where the load is light to medium and is continuous. Another variety is needle bearings. This is a distinctive variety of bearing as its rollers need to be four times the diameter of the bearing itself. Thus this bearing has a huge surface area and is also a more compact type. This style is generally utilized in engine components, for instance compressors, transmissions or even the drive shaft of a vehicle. Other kinds of bearings include, roller bearings, thrust ball bearings, roller thrust bearings, taper roller bearings and many more.
Bearings have made rotating components possible. Without this component there would be excessive friction between components resulting in a slow deterioration. This would ultimately cause the component to stop functioning correctly and then fail. Bearings are utilized in everything that rolls, turns or revolves and are an important component part.
