The HTC Merge Vs. The IPhone 4
Let us begin the comparison with a simple rundown of both these devices. The HTC Merge is a lot like other Android phones in many respects. It features a fairly powerful 800 MHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and an as yet undetermined storage capacity although, either 16 or 32 GB would make sense. It also sports a 5 MP camera capable of 720p video, a 3.8″ WVGA screen and a full QWERTY slider keyboard. Despite the fact that the HTC Merge is going to be offered by Verizon and as such is a CDMA handset, it includes a SIM card slot which allows it to be used in most of the rest of the world on GSM networks. That makes it incredibly versatile for those who travel far and wide. In other words, it’s a true “world phone”.
The iPhone 4 features the highly respected Apple A4 chip, which is a combination of an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU clocked at 1 GHz and a PowerVR SGX535 GPU in one package. Behind that there’s 512 MB of RAM and up to 32 GB of storage. The iPhone 4 known to be one of the slimmest smart phones in the world, and the HTC Merge won’t change that. Its 5 MP camera is also nearly flawless when it comes to snapping pictures in nearly any conditions, thanks to its top-notch resolution. With a scratch-resistant 3.5″ screen, it’s nearly identical in size to just about every other major smart phone on the market.
In terms of software and usability, the HTC Merge will no doubt satisfy both Android veterans and newcomers with its seamless user interface. It offers HTC Sense 1.6 running atop the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. With that kind of software as well as the versatility of a touch screen and a physical keyboard, the HTC Merge makes multi-tasking feel effortless. As far as HTC Merge accessories are concerned, there are already a slew of HTC Merge Case options and HTC Merge Chargers available on the Internet or through traditional retailers for those who like to customize.
But I guess the thing Apple phones have been most known for is the software. The App Store has almost every application that the user may want or need. The iOS 4 platform has been similarly lauded for its ease of use and solid performance when it comes to battery life. The lack of Flash on the iPhone doesn’t appear to be a deal breaker for most, but Android users would notice it right away. Despite the accusations of creating a “walled garden”, Apple seems to be giving its users more or less what they want, despite the drawbacks of such a closed system.
But at the end of the day, people who have already got their eyes on the iPhone 4 are going to get it regardless. For those with a more open mind who want the power and bandwidth of CDMA networks in the United States but the versatility of GSM capability on the road, the HTC Merge makes a compelling argument for itself. The Merge does everything pretty good, and it’ll be sure to get even better with the next compatible Android release comes out. On the other hand, the iPhone 4 gets bragging rights for being chic and compact. Ultimately, it comes down to taste as both phones are so evenly matched in most other regards.
