Exterior house shutters are made with many different materials. They are also for sale in many different styles. Shutters nowadays are made from vinyl, aluminum, wood, and wood composite. All of these shutters can make your home appear more appealing. Shutter Styles
There are two basic styles of exterior house shutters. One style is the narrow paneled shutters which include small louvers. These are considered the more conventional shutters normally installed on homes. The other style is the wider louvered shutters that are known as plantation type shutters. Shutter Finish
If you choose wooden shutters, you will have to have your shutters either stained or painted. Staining is the technique of applying a see-through color and then wiping it off. You are able to see the grains of the wood with staining. Painting gives the shutters an opaque coating. As with everything else, the ideal finish is determined by your personal taste. You should see to it that they are coated with sealant, however, whether they are painted or stained.
If your shutters are made of vinyl, they do not require painting and cannot be stained. Vinyl shutters are ready to hang and are maintenance free.
Unit Sizes
The size of your house shutters naturally have to reflect the size of your windows. Although they will most likely never be closed, the shutters should still seem as though they are able to swing closed and cover the whole window opening. This means that the shutters should be large enough to cover the whole window. You need to know the dimensions of your window so the shutters will look right. Also remember that you can use double tiered or single tiered shutters, both of which make a difference.
Price
Shop the prices of manufacturers in your neighborhood as well as those online. You could get custom made shutters from a carpenter, and should seak to any locally that build shutters. That may not be your cheapest purchase, though. You will normally find house shutters for less money online than at a home improvement center because you should not have the expense of sales commissions or overhead. Purchasing shutters from the factory can be more affordable. Just remember to measure carefully and ask the customer representatives questions before ordering the shutters.
